Edge of your seat thriller.
“Red Mercury” written in 2022 by Garry D Weiss, is a timely spy thriller, which begins in a military retirement facility, flashes back to the European Theatre during WWII, then returns to the current time. At just 226 pages it is not a long novel, yet the characters move through the book in numerous locations and situations to the believable and thoughtful conclusion.

Red Mercury did not disappoint. What a great read! I really enjoyed the character development along with the plot. I suspect a second book is in the making. If so, I'm buying!

Excellent story line.
Joe Savage, a retired Tax CPA for the FBI, is visiting his father, Reggie Savage, a former WWII B-17 pilot, at a memory care unit. In a brief moment of clarity from dementia, Captain Savage recognizes Joe as his son begging him “…do not open it. Burn it and let it be the end.” Reggie slips back into the cloud of his illness and passes away a few days later, unable to offer Joe any further explanation of this outburst.

Fast paced political thiller.
The author introduces the reader to various characters and circumstances. While this technique is often used in this genre, Weiss (a retired CPA) populates “Red Mercury” with personalities (energy CEO, femme fatale, Russian thugs, FBI agents) and events (travel, liaisons, kidnapping, double crosses) which are well developed and credible. This reader, a long-time fan of le Carre, Clancy, and Grisham, was often surprised by how the ending of one chapter seamlessly moved in to the next chapter’s events by this first-time writer.

Fast paced political thiller.
I found “Red Mercury” to be an exciting spy-thriller, and I look forward to reading more from Garry D Weiss. I am hoping for a second in a continuing series of Joe Savage and crew.

Red Mercury is an engaging thriller that weaves together mystery, suspense and compelling characters in a fast-paced page-turner. The book tells the story of the son of a World War II veteran who struggles to unlock the secrets his bomber pilot father and fellow crewmembers had kept for seven decades. As protagonist Joe Savage tries to find and piece together clues, he discovers he’s in a deadly high-stakes race with an industrialist and Russian agents to unlock a puzzle that could lead to an energy industry breakthrough — or a frightening weapon. Red Mercury is built on a solid historical base, featuring accurate depictions of World War II and routines aboard a B-17 flying combat missions in Europe. What sets Red Mercury apart from other thrillers are its relatable and likeable characters and its frequent and inventive plot twists, which lead the reader from one cliffhanger to another. The book is a fast read. Once I started it, I found it impossible to put down. I highly recommend Red Mercury — and I look forward to its sequel.
